Most classes have learned to play 5 notes. These are all of the notes introduced in our first unit. In our book each unit is called an Opus. Students should know and be able to play all of the notes needed to learn the songs in Opus 1. While we won't play everything in class, students can learn all of these songs at home. We have also learned to count and clap rhythms using quarter notes (1 beat), half notes (2 beats) and whole notes (4 beats) and their corresponding rests.
This is a great time to discuss practice strategies. When students want to learn a new song, they should follow these steps:
By now students should be able to practice for about 20 minutes without a break. Try to find 20 minutes each day for focused practice. You will be amazed how quickly students progress when they practice regularly.

- Clap and count the rhythm of the song. Use a metronome if you have one to help keep a steady beat.
- Say the name of each note and review the fingering or slide position.
- Say the note names in rhythm (use that metronome again) while fingering or sliding them.
- Play the song.
