Band instruments are divided into families based on their characteristics. Click on an instrument to learn more about how to play it.
Woodwind Family
They make their sound by blowing air across a reed (a carved piece of cane) or a hole/fipple. Most are or were once made of wood. Woodwinds change pitch by pressing keys or covering holes. |
Brass Family
All make their sound by capturing the vibration of your lips in a cup-shaped mouthpiece. Brasses change pitch by redirecting air using valves or slides and by changing the firmness of the vibrating lips. |
Percussion Family
All make their sound by being hit or struck. There are 2 main groups in this family: pitched (can play melodies) unpitched (play rhythms) |
